#FMP-Progress: Creating the Environment- Process and Materials

Creating the Environment for the project:

assets

Park ground:
For the ground, I used the polygon plane model and gave it a grass texture that I downloaded from the google images. grass

To create a bump in the ground, I took the same image and changed it to black and white in Photoshop. When values get brighter, working their way to white, details appear to pull out of the surface. To contrast that, when values get darker and closer to black, they appear to be pushing into the surface.

I don’t think the grass texture or the bump is visible when rendering the scene. I need to look for a better texture for the ground.

Sky:
I applied Arnold Lights preset – Sky dome Light to my scene and downloaded a picture of a sky from google images:
https://www.google.com/search?q=cartoon+sky+hdri&sxsrf=ACYBGNQ8c15DHBL3Zh40bWGo-0l95EGGxw:1573086770890&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=_AjYgklgbZwBdM%253A%252CHNNQKpgWgMJVLM%252C_&vet=1&usg=AI4_-kRDdlWNfuyygfy1IVLaJOBcQiJ-NA&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjE4bfx7NblAhXNVBUIHcHEBCIQ9QEwBnoECAcQKA#imgrc=_AjYgklgbZwBdM:&vet=1

and tweaked it a little in Photoshop to get this desired effect.sky

I changed the image format from Jpeg to hdr so I can apply it to the Skydome light in my scene and make it look seamless.

Ice cream cart:
I modeled the cart as described in a previous post: https://wordpress.com/post/shraddhamithinti.home.blog/455

Paul:
The character rig that I used as the ice cream vendor is one of the Long Winter rigs- Paul.

Park Benches:
I downloaded the park bench model from Turbosquid for free: https://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/826016

bench

Dustbins:
I used the dustbin model from the same website:
https://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/826016

I made the texture for the bins in photoshop and imported it onto the scene. I applied the Automatic UV wrap map to this texture on bins.

Trees:
The tree model is from the same website as well:
https://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/826016

tree

The textures for this tree came along with it with a bump.

Bricks:
I got the basic brick model from turbo-squid and placed them according to how I envisioned the scene:
https://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/954331

I created the rock texture using the Maya material editor. Faced a problem when trying to add this texture to rest of the bricks in the scene. I usually just right click on the object and add material from ‘Assign favourite Material’ editor and select the appropriate material to lay over the object. But I had so many materials applied in this scene that it was difficult to look for this material in the editor.

I figured I could apply the material through Hypershade, and realised this method is easier for assigning materials. So for the rest of the Brick walls. I selected them all, right clicked the brick material and select the option ‘Assign material to selection

Problems faced:

  • The grass texture isn’t showing in the render, I think the grass blades are too close together and that’s why it’s not recognizable in the render. Will have to try another texture for the surface of the ground of the park.
  • The wood texture that I created in Maya and applied to the park bench can be seen in the shaded display with texture map mode on Maya but doesn’t show up in the render. Figure out why.
  • The eyes of Paul are not visible in the Rendered scene. Figure out why.ice cream cart
  • Set up proper lighting for the scene.
